Autism/Childhood Schizophrenia was a standard diagnosis back in the early 60s. Autism has nothing to do with Childhood Schizophrenia but we didn't know that back then. The diagnosis of "Autism/Childhood Schizophrenia" came about with the second edition of the DSM (published in 1952) and defined autism as a psychiatric condition—a form of childhood schizophrenia marked by a detachment from reality. It was during the early 70s that people doing research in this field realized there were differences between the two. When the third edition of the DSM came out in 1980, autism was separated from Schizophrenia.
