I just want to interject, "witches" were never burned, they were imprisoned/hanged, with the exception of an incident where a man was slowly crushed by a weighted board
Of course witches were never burned because witches don't exist. Innocent people accused of being witches were occasionally burned because they think fire purifies your body and soul in the name of god or something. A notable example is Joan of arc who was burned at the stake for witchcraft. They don't only burn witches though they will burn anyone suspected of being a devil worshiper or vampire or heretic or anything they don't like that goes against the church. Heresy in general is a burnable offense not just witchcraft. And burning wasn't the only way they would kill them just one of the many. One way they did it was tie your feet to something heavy and throw you on n the water. If you drown you were innocent but if not then you're a witch because water repels them or something so you die either way. There is the crushing thing you mentioned the stretching board and also the breaking wheel and those human size cages and good old fashioned flogging etc.

That's fair enough. Thinking about it I guess they should receive equivalent punishment for attempted murder. Both are severe violations of someone's body that will have life long effects on the victim but a life wasn't ended so ending the perpetrators life doesn't seem like justice

I actually believe most of them didn't believe in half the shit they said and did, only wanting power. The Salem witch trials were barely a drop in the bucket compared to the rest of history and almost not worth mentioning. Most of the burnings were just sprinkled throughout history all over the world and not all in one place at one time. They usually didn't keep many records because those were expensive and most typically get lost to time anyway. And yeah they didn't always burn them. Many were drowned or beaten to death before having a false confession forced out of them but it doesn't mean it didn't happen.
Fire was seen as a mercy to them even though it's probably one of the most painful ways to go because they are stupid and it is supposed to purify your soul or something. It would typically be the end result of the whole torture trial thing in many cases (not just witches) because of superstition. If not they are just tortured to death which can be about as painful. Often times they would burn the body even if dead too. So they weren't always alive when they did it.
