Discord killed off Skype in the same way Skype killed off AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), by being better than their predecessor.
It probably won't be long until something replaces Discord sooner or later and we'll be hearing news about Discord shutting down in the future when everyone moves on to something better than Discord eventually.
