He updates the featured box very sporadically, and removes things from it even more sporadically. He seems to add things to the box as he find out about them and then when adding the latest event would make the box unreasonably big he just clears everything but the most recent things.

Its probably just the easiest way for him to manage it.
 
I havent gone through all of Null bitching about having kids, but I do wanna put these words in:

If he has trouble making executive decisions on his forum because "People wont like me", as well as occasionally enjoying the funny (malicious) pranks on his users, then I genuinely fear what he'd do to his offspring. The easy answer would be "if he has a girl, he'd rape her" and... I mean I wouldn't put it past him... realistically, I think he'd be a very neglectful father.

Additionally, I'm gay. Thats not a punchline. Unlike the consensus of the LGBT sandwich, I will argue that it's more of a choice then its given credit for. And there's where I'm going with this. Your life and destiny is up to you. I don't want mine to be having kids, I want to put that energy into other ventures that would be too powerlevely to talk about here.

Guess I'm just a traitor to the white race or something!

well, more artistic ventures - ones that while I do hope will outlast me, I'm also of the view that once you finally topple over and die that nothing from that point really matters.

If Null is concerned about a legacy - he has one. He's the one who brought Kiwifarms into the world. There would probably still be something like /cow/ without him, but it wouldn't be as massive. For him, its such a big legacy that even if he does something else, it will be the thing people remember him for. Its such a big legacy that even if he decides to throw in the towel, a successor forum will pop up almost immediately.

You know that Lowtax guy? He wrote a book about strange WW2 inventions that I once had. But people won't remember him for that. They'll remember him for making the Somethingawful forum. Even well after he has sold it.

So maybe Null should focus more on treating his forum right rather than being such a poor parent that he can't even handle taking care of a fucking plant.

Eh, but that's not even a legacy though. If Kiwi Farms shut down tomorrow I'm not even sure how many of us would even remember it in a decade's time. I'm not even sure Kiwi Farms would be an albatross around Josh's neck for very long either. Josh's problems, as @Vex has shown us with his threads, stem from the fact that he's Josh. People don't dislike him because he's the KF admin, they dislike him because he's a laughable autistic jackass (and it's that sort of person that's 'okay' with the idea of tearing his own life apart just to host some gossip website where you're allowed to say nigger and not get banned).

Josh is just doing what every other failure in human history has done. "Oh well, my life's fucked and I've accomplished nothing of consequence. But I still want to have 'mattered', so I guess I'll pump out some kids."

I actually think it will be. KF has been used as a source whenever someone needs to dig up info on someone. Gonna talk for an hour on Yandredev? You'll be sourcing his thread. Hell, KF even has a Wikipedia page made after he called New Zealand a bunch of faggots. No, if he ever throws in the towel then the place will be remembered for decades to come, likely until something even worse replaces it
 
The Farms aren't a bad accomplishment in the slightest, warts and all. They just don't really do anything for him on the life-course he seems to want for himself, which is a rather curious one indeed - a grass is greener kind of situation? The dream tradwife isn't going to really be keen on that background or the kind of life it entails, given the whole payment processor and random schizos harassing him thing. But there are eccentric women aplenty who might take well to that odd lifestyle and give him the recognition for maintaining the site that he clearly enjoys, true of any cult-of-personality-esque figure.

If he significantly dialed back what was hosted on the farms and weakened a number of its core tenets, he could probably achieve more comfortable success with the website that could translate into a modicum of indirect income -- in essence, rob the payment providers of reasons to deny him service. But for the moment, he seems passionately committed to his own vision of what it should be. His interest in SEO suggests that he does want growth and traffic to increase, and he's clearly invested significant theoretical and real sums into keeping it up. Someone that understands what this entails, mistakes and missteps and all, might find his dedication to be endearing.

What seems to frustrate most posters, and probably frustrates Null himself, is a kindof back-and-forth that seems to come with him trying to figure out the path he wants to put his 30s on overlapping with the path for the forums. He doesn't enjoy how things are political, yet he views the politicization as inevitable and highlights political topics himself from time to time. He's ready to drop the site on a dime if 230 comes under fire (when, by his words), yet he's looking to put more cash into the hardware and searching for better places to host it. The age of the lolcow is passed, yet there's still a desire to be the premier lolcow gossip site, etc.

In the end, though, I think I can sympathize with him because I don't take the internet too seriously. He's a strange person running a strange site who has strange behaviors, but that seems to be rather par for the course. Maybe if I was, like, one of those people who tried to help him out or give him advice or something and I felt slighted I'd see it, but eh. Ultimately I think that the Farms are a hangout for misfits from every walk of life that don't always get along, and it only makes sense that an at times surly misfit would be the one to curate such a place.

I'll certainly miss this strange isle of misfits when it implodes, but I don't really know if I'd follow the migration elsewhere once the pandemic shit loosens up. Perhaps to the wider world it wouldn't even merit a footnote, but this sort of atmosphere will be missed by its regulars. Imageboards just don't offer the same je ne sais quois.

Like sure, we can't all be Isaac Newton, and for most people their legacy will be their kids. They're still gonna be forgotten within three generations. I know almost nothing about my great grandparents and literally nothing about their parents, and most people I know are in the same boat.

I probably sound like a doomer, but I don't view this as a bad thing or a good thing, simply a fact. Just do the best you can with the time you have. If having kids will make you fulfilled, and you can care for them properly, go ahead. If you don't want to have kids, that's fine too.

you bring up Isaac Newton but what about the people that couldn't have kids because of medical bullshit? George Washington's ability to reproduce was taken from him because of smallpox, George Lucas from a racing incident, George Moon castrated himself after caught fucking a teenage girl.

and i'm sure there are other non-George examples of great men with legacies but no kids.

hell even when you have kids you might not want to be remembered for them Ben Franklin had like 5 and preferred being known for his accomplishments, same with Jefferson and Rockwell.
