From Peaceful Demonstration to Street Chaos

What began as a peaceful demonstration demanding the rescue of kidnapped schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State quickly descended into chaos after suspected thugs allegedly disrupted the protest.

The demonstration, organised under the "Save Our Children" campaign, was led by social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), alongside members of his Ratel Movement and concerned residents. The protest came after weeks of nationwide outrage over the abduction of dozens of pupils and teachers from schools in Oriire Local Government Area. This tragedy had become one of Nigeria's most talked-about security crises.

The protesters marched through major parts of Ibadan carrying placards with inscriptions such as "Bandits Must Go" and "Save Our Children," calling on both the Federal Government and Governor Seyi Makinde to intensify efforts to secure the safe release of the victims.

The Protest That Sparked National Attention

The Ibadan protest did not happen overnight.
For weeks leading up to it, VDM had made the Oyo kidnapping one of his biggest advocacy campaigns. He had:

• Called for a nationwide boycott of public schools in solidarity with the abducted pupils and teachers.
• Issued a four-day ultimatum to the Federal Government.
• Proposed crowdfunding negotiations if authorities failed to secure the victims' release.
• Visited the Nigerian Air Force headquarters in Abuja, demanding stronger military action against kidnappers.
• Personally led a protest to the Oyo State Government House, where Governor Makinde assured demonstrators that security agencies were conducting a specialised rescue operation. ([SocietyGists][3])

As public support for the campaign grew, so did tensions surrounding the demonstrations.

Alleged Thugs Disrupt Protest

Videos that circulated widely on social media appeared to show suspected thugs confronting protesters during the Ibadan march.

Although the exact circumstances surrounding the confrontation remain disputed, several participants alleged that individuals attempted to intimidate demonstrators and scatter the peaceful gathering.

The incident immediately sparked concern online, with many Nigerians questioning why a protest centred on rescuing kidnapped schoolchildren would face disruption.

VDM Responds

Reacting shortly after the incident, VeryDarkMan issued one of his strongest public warnings yet.

Clearly angered by what he described as an organised attempt to intimidate peaceful protesters, he warned that anyone attempting to violently disrupt future demonstrations organised by the Ratel Movement should consider themselves forewarned.

"This is to inform the public that after what happened at the protest in Ibadan with the thugs that attacked us, anytime the Ratels come out for a peaceful protest again, any thug that comes out to disrupt the protest has been warned."

Although VDM did not call for violence, his remarks signalled that his movement would no longer tolerate attempts to intimidate citizens exercising their constitutional right to peaceful assembly.

Growing Debate Over Protest Security

The incident has sparked wider conversations about the safety of public demonstrations in Nigeria. Supporters argue that citizens have every right to protest insecurity without fear of intimidation or attacks, peacefully.

Others believe security agencies should provide greater protection during demonstrations involving sensitive national issues, particularly when large crowds are expected.

Critics, however, cautioned that emotionally charged rhetoric following such incidents should be handled carefully to avoid further escalation.

Part of a Larger National Campaign

The warning also reflects how VDM's activism has evolved over recent weeks.
Rather than focusing solely on celebrity controversies, his attention has increasingly shifted toward national issues, including:

• Rising insecurity.
• School kidnappings.
• Government accountability.
• Civic participation.
• Public protests.
• Security sector reforms.

The Oyo campaign has become one of the most sustained activism efforts of his career, extending beyond online commentary into organised demonstrations and direct engagement with government officials.
