From Social Media Campaigns to the Streets

What began as online criticism has now transformed into physical protests and confrontations with government authorities.

For weeks, social media activist VeryDarkMan (VDM) has relentlessly campaigned over the abduction of teachers and pupils from Community High School, Ahoro-Dada, in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, one of Nigeria's most disturbing kidnapping cases in recent months.

Unlike many viral stories that gradually disappear from public attention, VDM refused to let this one fade.

He repeatedly accused both the Federal Government and Oyo State authorities of failing to demonstrate the urgency the situation deserved, insisting that every passing day placed the lives of the victims in even greater danger.

The Oyo Kidnapping That Shocked Nigerians

The kidnapping occurred after heavily gunmen stormed the school, abducting teachers and several pupils before disappearing into nearby forests.

The incident immediately reignited national conversations about the worsening security situation across Nigeria, particularly the increasing number of school kidnappings that have plagued the country since the infamous Chibok schoolgirls abduction in 2014.

As negotiations stalled and families continued waiting for news, frustration among citizens steadily grew. The crisis became even more emotional after videos reportedly emerged from captivity showing one of the abducted school officials pleading with authorities to prioritize negotiations over military confrontation.

Those images further intensified public pressure on government officials.

VDM's Escalating Campaign

Rather than simply posting online, VDM gradually intensified his activism.

In the days leading up to the protest, he had already:

• Called for a nationwide public school boycott in solidarity with the kidnapped teachers and pupils.
• Proposed crowdfunding ransom money if government rescue efforts failed.
• Issued a four-day ultimatum to federal authorities to secure the victims' release.
• Visited the Nigerian Air Force headquarters in Abuja, urging security agencies to intensify operations against kidnappers and bandits.
• Continued criticizing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration over what he described as its slow response to worsening insecurity.

By the time he arrived in Ibadan, many supporters viewed the protest as the next logical step in his campaign.

VDM Storms Oyo Government House

Accompanied by members of the Ratel Movement and concerned citizens, VeryDarkMan appeared outside the Oyo State Government House to demand immediate action from Governor Seyi Makinde.

Addressing the governor directly, VDM argued that waiting endlessly while criminals dictated the pace of events would only embolden kidnappers.

"Mr. Governor, if you're waiting for the perfect time to rescue those children, they'll keep them there for long and even marry them off to other kidnappers."

The emotional statement reflected growing fears that prolonged captivity increases the risk of victims being moved deeper into forests, trafficked, or permanently separated from their families.

"We're Ready to Enter the Bush With You"

Perhaps the most striking moment came when VDM declared that he and members of his movement were prepared to physically accompany security agencies into the forests if necessary.

"We're ready to enter the bush with you today or tomorrow, and we know there'll be collateral damage, and we're ready for it."

He explained that years of studying the activities of bandits had convinced him that criminal groups interpret delayed responses as weakness.

According to VDM, allowing kidnappers to operate without immediate resistance encourages them to become more organized, more confident, and more demanding.

A Warning About Future Attacks

Beyond the current kidnapping, VDM warned that failure to decisively confront armed groups could have long-term consequences for Oyo State.

He argued that if bandits realize authorities are reluctant to challenge them, they may eventually begin imposing illegal taxes and levies on rural farming communities, similar to what has reportedly happened in parts of northwestern Nigeria.

"I've studied these bandits for so long. If they push and you don't push back, they'll see it as weakness and start demanding levies from Oyo farmers."

His comments echoed concerns already raised by several security analysts, who have warned that criminal groups increasingly seek to establish territorial control rather than merely carrying out isolated kidnappings.

Public Reactions Remain Divided

The protest quickly generated mixed reactions across social media.

Supporters praised VDM for refusing to abandon the victims after the initial news cycle faded, arguing that sustained public pressure is often necessary to keep governments accountable.

Others, however, cautioned that rescue operations involving heavily armed kidnappers require careful intelligence gathering and professional coordination.

Some security experts warned that emotional public pressure could complicate ongoing negotiations or tactical operations already underway behind the scenes.

Despite the differing opinions, many Nigerians agreed on one point: the continued wave of kidnappings has become one of the country's most urgent national security challenges.

The Bigger Picture

VDM's protest represents a noticeable shift in his activism.

Once primarily known for exposing celebrities, influencers, and online fraud, his recent focus has increasingly centered on national issues, including:

• Insecurity.
• Terrorism.
• School kidnappings.
• Government accountability.
• Civic participation.
• Political reform ahead of the 2027 elections.

His campaign surrounding the Oyo schoolchildren has become one of his most sustained activist efforts to date, extending far beyond social media commentary into direct public demonstrations.
