She is not wrong. The 1980s/90s Khmer Rouge was backed by the US because they were opposed to the pro-Vietnam (pro-Soviet) government in Cambodia. They were literally part of the government coalition in the US-recognized government that still used the Khmer Rouge country name "Democratic Kampuchea" and had the largest army so the US backed them. When Vietnam liberalized, the USSR fell, and the US normalized relations, the US ceased backing them and there was a ceasefire.

Like imagine if instead of a few units, 90% of the Ukrainian military were die-hard neo-Nazis who actually had murdered Jews. That is how it was for the government the US backed in Cambodia in the 1980s, where almost all of their military and many of their politicians (including Pol Pot, of course, who was still leader of the Khmer Rouge) were directly involved in Pol Pot's dictatorship and mass killings.
