Who is Broda Mike?
Broda Mike is one of Nigeria's emerging social commentators and digital creators known for blending street-level observations with political and social analysis.
Unlike many content creators who focus strictly on entertainment, Broda Mike regularly addresses issues surrounding governance, youth participation, accountability, leadership, and civic responsibility. His videos often spark debate because he tends to challenge popular opinions rather than follow public sentiment.
This week, his attention turned toward one of Nigeria's most influential online voices: Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM).
The Challenge to VeryDarkMan
A video currently making rounds online shows Broda Mike openly questioning VDM's long-standing position of political neutrality.
According to Mike, criticizing government failures is important, but criticism alone is not enough if influential voices refuse to support alternative solutions.
Referring to the current administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Broda Mike argued that ordinary Nigerians also share responsibility for the country's direction.
He stated:
"President Bola Tinubu is not a failure. It's you and me that are failures because we can't use our voices to change bad governance."
He then directed a pointed question at VeryDarkMan:
"You say Tinubu has failed. Who are you supporting to change the situation?"
The statement immediately sparked reactions online, with many viewers divided over whether public influencers should openly endorse political candidates.
The Political Neutrality Debate
For years, VeryDarkMan has maintained that he is not a politician and does not belong to any political party.
While he frequently criticizes government policies, corruption, insecurity, and poor leadership, he has consistently resisted pressure to align himself with a specific political movement publicly. Supporters argue that this neutrality allows him to hold everyone accountable without becoming a mouthpiece for any politician.
Critics, however, believe that remaining neutral during critical political moments weakens the impact of his activism. Broda Mike appears to belong to the second camp.
Tunde Ednut vs. VeryDarkMan
To strengthen his argument, Broda Mike referenced popular blogger and influencer Tunde Ednut.
According to him, Tunde Ednut openly supported Peter Obi and the Labour Party movement during the 2023 presidential election despite living outside Nigeria. Broda Mike praised that decision as an example of using influence to support a political alternative rather than remaining on the sidelines.
He argued that many Nigerians with large platforms are reluctant to publicly support candidates because of the backlash that often follows political endorsements.
In his view, that reluctance contributes to the country's political stagnation.
"Tunde Ednut openly supported Peter Obi, but you say you're neutral. Everybody will continue to feel this heat until we wake up."
Why This Matters Ahead of 2027
The timing of the debate is significant.
With conversations about the 2027 general elections already gaining momentum, influential voices are increasingly being pressured to reveal where they stand politically.
The question Broda Mike raised is one many Nigerians have been asking: Should activists and social commentators simply criticize leaders, or should they actively support political alternatives?
For someone like VeryDarkMan, whose influence reaches millions of young Nigerians, the answer carries significant weight.
VDM's Previous Position
This is not the first time VeryDarkMan has been questioned about politics.
He has previously criticized multiple political figures across different parties, including comments directed at Peter Obi, President Tinubu, and other political actors. VDM has repeatedly insisted that his role is to speak on issues affecting ordinary Nigerians rather than campaign for politicians.
His supporters believe that once activists openly endorse candidates, they risk losing their independence and credibility.
Public Reactions
As expected, reactions have been mixed.
Some Nigerians agree with Broda Mike, arguing that influential figures should help direct political conversations and encourage support for better alternatives.
Others defended VeryDarkMan, saying his independence is precisely what makes his criticism valuable. Many pointed out that political neutrality does not automatically mean political indifference.
The debate continues to generate discussion across social media platforms as Nigerians look ahead to another crucial election cycle.
