Inquiry Why are most repeat image loads cache misses on this site?

I view a thread once, and then I view it again 5 minutes later. The images have to download from the server both times.

I think they should be loaded from browser cache the second time around. Why isn't this the case?

It's noticeable too when picking a reaction image, 2/3 are cached but it has to load in the last 1/3 every time. Part of the rustic Web 1.0 charm.
