Of course, the truth is always that nobody would have cared to begin with, but for a person with a guilty conscience the thing they want to hide might as well feel like a sign on their forehead. It's like when you got that one pimple as a teenager and thought you looked like a freak for days but nobody even noticed, it was all in your head, your brain was playing tricks on you because you feared the disapproval.
