A developing alliance of 3 NATO adversaries is coming into play on the international political scene: Russia, Iran and China. Russia is rapidly deepening its relations with Iran in response to sanctions imposed on Moscow and Tehran by the International Community. Russia and China are ramping up military cooperation between the two countries.

Russia is deepening its military relationship with Iran. Its relationship with Russia involves supplying Putin with Iranian-made drones to use in Putin’s war against the Ukraine striking at the country’s electrical grid. Transport flights have been tracked from Iran to Russia. Reports document that trainers from the IRGC (Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps) are instructing Russian personnel on how to use the weapons that Iran is furnishing. Russia is also reciprocating with military and technical support as the relationship between the two country is turning into a fully developed defense partnership.

China’s relationship with Russia has also grown closer since Russia’s invasion of the Ukraine. While China officially takes a neutral position it was reported by Newsweek that Li Zhanshu chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress told Russian lawmakers "On the Ukraine issue, for example, the United States and NATO are expanding directly on Russia's doorstep, threatening Russia's national security and the lives of Russian citizens”. China has also officially taken a “no-limits” friendship with Russia. Russia strongly supports China’s policies regarding Taiwan.

In response to NATO’s actions regarding the Ukraine issue, Russia and China bilateral relations have deepened the most among the armed forces and the defense industry. Russia and China conducted a joint patrol over the pacific, sent forces with more than 2000 troops, more than 300 military vehicles, 21 combat aircraft, and three warships to take part in a single Russian drill

Iran’s biggest trading partner is China. During the first seven months in 2022 Iranian exports to China increased by 25% and stood at $9.66 billion. Iran, Russia and China stated their intent of holding joint naval exercises in the autumn of 2022. Iran has also signed an agreement of obligations in order to be accepted into the Shanghai Cooperation Organization which is a central Asian security organization dominated by China and Russia. Iran is expected to become a full member by April 2023.
