I'll just say this. Video game consoles suck these days.

consoles became a retarded thing to buy around the ps4/xbone era. the era of console exclusives that seemed to be the norm in the 360 era went away. Nintendo is its own category. the same way disney is sort of like its own category when it comes to amusement parks.

the same way Disney themepark people and theme park people are two entirely different categories and everyone understands that. Nintendo and gamers are like two different groups. Plus much like Disney its more understandable when a child loves Nintendo. but anyone past 15 into it is seen as a freak for a very good reason.

like in the US gaming really is dying like the other guy said because gaming really is that couch multiplayer fun time. games nowadays are mostly f2p bullshit where they cater to whales or streamers and the silly fun people would have isn't there anymore. people complain about "gun and ball" or "nintendo" gamers but in the 2000s that was what being into videogames meant for 99% of people, those map games or other shitty computer game sim things weren't enjoyable to people and they were in a small minority of weirdos.

i know for a fact younger generations aren't into video games anymore, it died in the 2010s.

i don't think thats true. surely MS/Sony got some cut from the whole being allowed to play the disk on their console thing. even steam doesn't take a 30% cut from major publishers, surely sony/MS gave 2k a much better deal. under 20% easily.

Maybe they have negotiated a deal, it's not a free lunch like it was before though Sony/MS are fronting all of the costs for the digital hosting and distribution. IIRC 3rd parties would pay for the price of printing the disc and the rest was on Sony/MS. Sony/MS got a cut of royalties if a game sold well, but never charged per game like we see today.

if you're talking about the US, you're almost entirely right. but worldwide the amount of ps5 owners is 25% higher now than ps3 owners when gtav came out, and that's not taking into account how many fuckers will buy the console at the last minute. you're forgetting that 3rd worlders didn't even have access to a PS3 back in 2013.

Maybe, but we have no idea what the solid figures are for PS5, as Sony changed their wording of what constitutes a sale from "sold through to a customer" to "sold to a distributor", they even say as much in their quarterly financials. They swapped the wording when they apparently missed their yearly target, twice, and had to revise down their estimates. At the time, most thought Sony had sold 80 million, in reality, on their financial release, it was 65 million, with (to this day) 50% of PSN users opting to stay on PS4.

The idea of people buying a PS5 to play GTA6 is a sound one, but I doubt how many people would drop £699 on a 6 year old console, one of the most popular of all time, who haven't already got one.

i can't wait for the ps6 announcement and the bundle for 2027. its the biggest no brainer of all time. it really won't matter the price or improvements they could stop making any more new generations of playstation after that because so few people will be using it for anything beyond the free bullshit or GTA.

PC release will come first, then double dipping on next gen consoles, then a PC super edition the year after. R* like the double and triple dipping of releasing the game every year on different platforms. That's if the game is still being played and people haven't returned to GTA5.
The PS6 will be $1200 on launch, give or take $100.

I'm going to have to strongly disagree with this.

It's not that younger generations hate video games now, it's that a lot of media in general is slop (it's not just video games).

You have young people discovering stuff from the before time (be it old TV shows, old movies, old video games, old music, old books, and so on from before they were born) and they wonder why did the older generations have the cool shit while they're stuck with utter slop. Young people look at the content the older generations had and then they see what they have and would rather buy a vinyl of a hit musician from the 2000's or the 1990's or earlier than that because almost everything that the younger generations have suck ass.

I don't really think video games are dead. I just think video games are way overdue for another 1983-styled video game crash where the video game industry needs a reset and start fresh (everyone thought video games died in 1983 but then companies like Nintendo stepped in and saved video games from the brink of extinction). Linux is already saving PC gaming by giving PC gamers a choice to finally escape Windows so who knows what can save consoles here (I know Sega said they will never go back to consoles but it would be a miracle if they did decide to come back to the video game console race).

We're just going through another bust period with pop culture media in the West in general but eventually after the storm passes, things will get better eventually (it always does).
