I kind of get his point, interacting with kids without their parents kind of works against the whole "stranger danger" thing even if it's online. It's not even about any implication of impropriety, it's about reinforcing the concept that kids should be peers with other kids, not adults.
Modeling good behavior for children is incredibly important, even if they're not someone you know, and even if that modeling involves not interacting with them. Kids don't really understand boundaries, and so between a child and adult, the responsibility of maintaining the child's boundaries and what is appropriate does fall to the adult.
That's my take anyhow, idk how he reasons about it.
Talking online =/= being a peer
Sometimes kids need adult perspectives. I saw a kid online once who was struggling with transitioning, I told him he wasnāt trans but rather just wasnāt hypermasculine and thatās ok. I canāt imagine his parents getting mad at me telling him heās not trans. Do you know how many minor only spaces he couldāve fallen into that wouldāve told him he was?
I donāt think minors and adults should be best friends online, I donāt believe minors should be online at all. But I think prohibiting all interaction despite the fact that anyone under 17 shouldnāt have a single social media account isnāt productive, interaction is important because anyone under 17 shouldnāt have a single social media account. The adults need to be there to tell the kids to be safe or just fucking leave. Iāve told kids online to stop posting their sh scars, get out of NSFW spaces, stop online dating, delete their accounts. This is stuff other kids just wonāt tell them.
Again, Iām not advocating for adults and kids to be besties online, just that prohibiting any interaction outside of DMs is very iffy to me.

If Green Reddit wants to maximally protect children online they should advocate for an Internet ID System like China has, but this conflicts with their views that the internet should be "free, open, and anonymous" which leads to an endless cat and mouse game between predators and the authorities. They can't genuinely hold these two opposing ideals at the same time, maximal anonymity and maximal child safety.

Honestly I think rather, a good way to keep kids off the internet is to make it ācringeā and shameful. Usually I am incredibly anti-cringe culture. āCringe cultureā made the internet so unbelievably boring and bland, like how KF is. Everyoneās just a carbon copy of eachother.
But kids just simply donāt belong on the internet. I think we need to go back to making fun of kids for simply having accounts, and I donāt mean light teasing, I mean make it genuinely problematic. In my little online spaces, Iāve found that works to keep kids offline if you make it an actually cancellable offense. I saw someone make a callout blog over a minor interacting with a NSFW artist (said NSFW artist didnāt know the minor was a minor), the the blog was calling out the minor and treating them like the bad guy. I think thatās good.
