He was sitting on official documents of Near’s autopsy, death notifications, certificates, etc. and all correspondence with people reporting his suicide to authorities. He didn’t utter a word until after someone else released documentation.
In fact he did utter plenty of words on the subject, all of them in complete opposition to the evidence he had in his hands. That's what makes it worse than just saying nothing.
