A Growing Pattern of High-Profile Conversions

Religion has always been a deeply personal decision, but when celebrities publicly change their faith, it often sparks intense public debate. In recent years, several well-known entertainers and public figures have announced their conversion to Islam, leading many fans to ask the same question: Is this simply personal conviction, or is there a broader trend?

The reasons vary. Some cite a spiritual search for meaning, others convert after marriage, while some describe life-changing personal experiences that led them to embrace Islam.

Here are some of the most notable names.

1. Central Cee Announces His Conversion

British rap superstar Central Cee surprised fans in 2026 when he publicly revealed that he had embraced Islam.

During a livestream, the rapper announced that he had taken the Shahadah (the Islamic declaration of faith), and revealed that he had adopted the name Akil (Aqeel).

"I just changed my name and took my Shahadah. I am a Muslim now."

Before making the announcement, Central Cee had never publicly identified with any religion, making the revelation one of the biggest celebrity faith stories of the year.

2. Burna Boy Says His Search for Truth Led Him to Islam

Grammy-winning Nigerian artist Burna Boy also made headlines after explaining that his spiritual journey eventually led him away from Christianity.

Speaking during an interview in 2025, Burna Boy said he spent years studying different religious texts while searching for answers. According to him, the more he researched, the more he questioned his previous beliefs until he eventually accepted Islam.

Following his announcement, many Muslim fans congratulated him and even suggested the Islamic name AbdulKareem, although Burna Boy has not officially adopted a new public Muslim name.

His conversion generated widespread discussion across both Christian and Muslim communities.

3. Priscilla Ojo Converts After Marriage

Influencer Priscilla Ojo, daughter of Nollywood actress Iyabo Ojo, also embraced Islam following her marriage to Tanzanian singer Juma Jux. Their high-profile wedding ceremonies in Nigeria and Tanzania attracted enormous media attention.

According to Juma Jux, Priscilla accepted Islam before their marriage and now bears the Islamic name Hadizah Mkambala.

Many viewed the decision as a natural part of their intercultural and interfaith marriage, while others debated whether religious conversion should ever accompany marriage.

4. Mercy Aigbe's Religious Journey

Popular Nollywood actress Mercy Aigbe openly acknowledged converting to Islam after marrying filmmaker Kazim Adeoti (Adekaz).

She later introduced herself publicly by her Muslim name, Hajia Minnah, and has participated in several Islamic events, including Ramadan lectures alongside her husband. Unlike many celebrities who avoid discussing religion, Mercy has spoken openly about her decision.

5. Mo Bimpe Embraced Islam Before Marriage

Yoruba actress Mo Bimpe (Adebimpe Oyebade) also converted to Islam before marrying actor Lateef Adedimeji.

She adopted the name Rahmatullah after embracing Islam.

She has previously revealed that religious differences initially caused concern within her family, especially from her father, before both families eventually gave their blessing to the marriage.

6. Faithia Balogun's Transition

Veteran actress Faithia Balogun, now known as Fathia Williams, was originally raised in a Roman Catholic family.

Following her marriage to actor Saidi Balogun, she converted to Islam and became known as Faithia.

Years later, her commitment to the faith was recognized when she received the Islamic chieftaincy title Atesin'se Adinni in Ogun State.

7. Liz DaSilva Also Converted After Marriage

Actress Liz DaSilva also embraced Islam after marrying Alhaji Olaoye.

She adopted the Islamic name Aishat and explained that her conversion reflected both her marriage and her desire to strengthen her family identity.

What Does It Mean to Convert to Islam?

Islam teaches that becoming a Muslim does not require an elaborate ceremony or clergy.

According to Islamic scholars, conversion begins with sincerely believing in:

• The Oneness of Allah (Tawhid).
• Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as Allah's final messenger.

The individual then recites the Shahadah:

"I testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah."

After that, the new Muslim gradually learns Islamic practices such as prayer, purification, fasting, and other religious obligations.

The Bigger Conversation

Celebrity conversions often attract enormous attention because public figures influence millions of people. While some observers see these stories as genuine expressions of faith, others believe marriage, culture, family, or personal relationships often play a significant role in such life-changing decisions. Ultimately, only the individuals themselves truly know the reasons behind their spiritual journeys.
