In 1990, at the end of the Cold War, Toyohiro Akiyama became the star of an improbable Japanese reality show when he was sent to the Mir space station alongside two Soviet cosmonauts. It was a spectacular $35 million ratings stunt, and it would make Akiyama the first journalist to go to space.
