Few bonds in Nigerian pop culture have generated as much conversation this year as the one between streamer Carter Efe and Afrobeats star Davido. What began as a celebrity connection has grown into a defining relationship in Efe's career, and 2026 has offered no shortage of moments proving the friendship remains as strong as ever.

The pair's closeness moved fully into public view in May, after Carter Efe defeated fellow entertainer Portable in a highly publicized celebrity boxing match in Lagos. Videos from that night showed Davido and Efe out celebrating together, with the singer hugging Efe in one clip and laughing as the newly crowned boxing champion showed off his belt. The images spread quickly across social media, with fans describing the pairing as one of the more unexpected but genuine friendships to come out of Nigeria's entertainment scene.

Carter Efe has since been open about how much that relationship has shaped his career. Speaking during a livestream days after the fight, he credited Davido directly with changing his life, recalling years spent promoting Wizkid for free without ever receiving public acknowledgment in return. He said Davido, by contrast, embraced him personally, and declared the singer as the artist he now aligns himself with. Weeks later, in a separate livestream, Efe went further, saying his connection with Davido had opened doors he never imagined, including invitations from government officials for livestream events, a level of recognition he attributed entirely to the friendship.

The relationship has not been without complications. In December, Efe and his associate Kolu fell into a public dispute after Kolu accused Efe of blocking him following a ₦20 million gift Davido had promised the pair during a livestream. An emotional Kolu appealed directly to Davido on video, claiming he had been cut out of his share of the money. The two men eventually reconciled, with Efe later posting footage of them on good terms, though the episode briefly put Davido's generosity at the center of an unflattering storyline rather than a celebratory one.

That controversy did little to slow the bond down. By July, as Efe's selection for Kai Cenat's Streamer University became national news, Davido's support resurfaced in a very public way. When Efe's United States visa application stalled ahead of the program and was ultimately denied, delaying his travel and threatening his participation, Davido addressed the situation directly. He offered public reassurance, telling Efe that his achievements already spoke for themselves regardless of the outcome, and noted that securing an American visa had become significantly harder under the current U.S. administration compared to previous years. The comments were widely shared as an example of Davido standing by Efe during a difficult, high-profile setback.

The friendship has also taken on a more ambitious, business-oriented dimension this year. Efe's announcement of the Afro World Cup Tour, a planned run of appearances across several major American cities including Houston, Atlanta, New York, Dallas and Los Angeles timed to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, drew direct backing from Davido. The singer was reported to have pledged support for flying Efe and his team to the United States for the tour, further tying his name and influence to Efe's biggest venture yet. For a project already generating significant buzz online, Davido's involvement gave it added weight and visibility, reinforcing just how intertwined the two men's public profiles have become.

Observers of Nigerian entertainment culture have noted that the relationship works in both directions. Efe's massive online following and constant livestream presence give Davido continuous, organic visibility with a young, highly engaged audience, while Davido's star power and industry standing have elevated Efe's status well beyond the skit-making and streaming circuit where he built his name. Their dynamic has increasingly been framed less as a celebrity favor and more as a genuine, mutually reinforcing partnership.

As of late July 2026, the relationship shows no signs of cooling. Despite the visa setback and the occasional controversy involving people around him, Efe continues to publicly credit Davido as the single most transformative figure in his career, while Davido continues to show up for him, both online and in person, at pivotal moments.

For many fans, what stands out most is how unlikely the pairing once seemed. Efe spent years building his name as a skit maker aligned closely with Wizkid's camp, promoting the singer's music without ever receiving reciprocal support. His pivot toward Davido, and the visible warmth that has followed, has become something of a case study in how quickly loyalties can shift in Nigerian entertainment when genuine support is offered in return. That shift has also placed Efe at the center of the long-running rivalry between Wizkid and Davido fanbases, with his public embrace of Davido regularly drawing reaction from both camps online.

With the Afro World Cup Tour still unfolding and Efe's international profile continuing to grow, their bond looks set to remain one of the more consistent and closely watched storylines in Nigerian entertainment for the rest of the year.
