October 29th, 2024: Miss Rwanda 2022, Divine Nshuti Muheto has been arrested for allegedly committing serious traffic offenses. According to the Rwanda National Police, she faces multiple charges including driving without a license, driving under the Influence (Alcohol), damaging public infrastructure and fleeing the scene. According to the police, this isn't the first time she has been involved in offenses of this matter and repeated traffic violations have continued to pose a danger to public safety.

Faustin Nkusi, the spokesperson of the National Public Prosecution Authority (NPPA), confirmed to The New Times that, "the file has been submitted to the Kicukiro Primary Court, and the pre-detention hearing is scheduled for tomorrow [October 31]."

Rwanda National Police on Tuesday, October 30, confirmed the arrest of Muheto over alleged driving without a license, driving under the influence of alcohol, damaging public infrastructure, and fleeing the scene.

The prosecution wanted a one-year and eight month jail term for the former beauty queen over drunk driving, damaging public infrastructure, and fleeing the scene after causing an accident. The incident happened on the night of October 24th. She was on her way home from a bar located in the Kicukiro District in Kigali. She was driving to her home in Kimironko.

She hit an electricity pole and a palm tree when she was driving drunk. the police conducted a blood alcohol test and found her blood alcohol level was high. Regarding the driving permit, one of her attorneys pointed out she had a provisional permit and understood the traffic rules. He also said Muheto left the car for her own safety because after the accident, people began gathering around her and it was late at night.

The prosecutor objected insisting that after Muheto fled the scene, and came back to pick up the phone, she still denied to the police that she was the driver of the car. He asked the judge to impose a sentence of 1 year and eight months (six months for drunk driving, two months for driving without a permit, and one year for fleeing the scene.

Muheto's lawyers argued that she should not be jailed but fined since she is a significant person who has projects of national importance in regards to fighting stunting. In addition she has expressed remorse for the crime and has asked for forgiveness. The attorneys also mentioned she is a student at the African Leadership University (ALU).

Kicukiro Primary Court on Wednesday, November 6, handed a three-month suspended sentence to Miss Rwanda 2022, Divine Nshuti Muheto, in a case related to drunk driving. The sentence is suspended for one year. She was also slapped with a Rwf190,000 fine ($137.56).
