Nintendo has been using the “NEX” multiplayer server system, which is over 18 years old. This system dates back to the Gamecube era of Nintendo. It’s an archaic system by now as server-side technology has advanced greatly in that time. Thankfully, it seems Nintendo is finally ditching that system in favor of a new one. This new system is named “NPLN” according to thomasnet_mc and it’s currently in the preview phase. The Monster Hunter Rise demo was the first test for this new multiplayer system. As a result, Monster Hunter Rise should be the first game to natively support it. OatmealDome corroborates this and says Nintendo’s goal is to make a smooth transition to the new server system. However, it remains to be seen if it will make an immediate positive effect for online.

It might take a while before online functionality on Switch and future Nintendo platforms benefits from NPLN but it’s a good upgrade nonetheless. Fun Fact: The NEX server has a function that checks if you're running Windows 98... that's how old it is.
