The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) issued a concerning alert on Thursday, revealing that young people in Borno State are resorting to drinking fermented human urine stored for over 10 days as a substitute for illicit drugs. Iliyasu Mani, the Commander of Narcotics in Borno State has disclosed this alarming trend in a statement delivered in Maiduguri. He emphasized the prevalent abuse of psychoactive substances among the youth, citing unconventional choices such as lizard dung, camel urine, Lipton soaked in gin, and Mentholated spirit mixed with soft drinks.
Mani highlighted the inhalation of toilet fumes and gutter dirt as part of their unconventional means to achieve intoxication. "These new psychoactive substances commonly abused today include Cannabis Sativa, skunk, cough syrup with codeine, ice, Tramadol, Rohypnol, Diazepam, Pentazocine, rubber solution, glue, gutter dirt, toilet fumes, lizard dung. Others include Lipton soaked in gin, camel urine, Mentholated spirit in soft drinks, 10-day-old human urine, and so on."
Despite the NDLEA's concerted efforts in combating drug abuse, Mani acknowledged that the challenge has intensified, particularly with the involvement of young teenagers, especially females, in the abuse of these new psychoactive substances. He reassured the public that the agency is actively addressing this issue, with the establishment of a remodeled counseling and rehabilitation center within the Borno State Command premises. Moreover, drop-in centers have been established across tertiary institutions to serve as research hubs for drug abuse prevention.
Under Mani's leadership, the NDLEA command has successfully seized 4.5 tonnes of illicit substances and apprehended 863 suspects. Out of the arrested individuals, 53 have been convicted, and 736 are currently undergoing counseling. Highlighting the severity of the issue, Mani referenced a United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime household survey conducted in 2018, reviewed in 2021 and 2022. The survey revealed a substance abuse prevalence in Nigeria at 14.3%, three times higher than the global average of 5.6%. The North-East recorded a 13.6% prevalence, the North-West at 12%, and the North-Central at 10%.
