The age-old question: who's your go-to stand-up comedian? For me, it's gotta be the one and only George Carlin. There's just something about his biting social commentary, clever wordplay, and unapologetic irreverence that never fails to leave me in awe. From his iconic "Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television" bit to his scathing critiques of politics and social norms, Carlin's comedy is like a time capsule of wit and wisdom.
But I'm curious, Onion farmers who's your favorite stand-up comedian from the old school? Are you a fan of the raw, unflinching honesty of Richard Pryor, who paved the way for generations of comedians to come.
Or do you prefer the high-energy, in-your-face style of Chris Rock, who was always pushing the boundaries of what's considered "acceptable" in comedy?

Maybe you're a fan of the laid-back, observational humor of Eddie Murphy,
or the raunchy stylings of Andrew Dice Clay

Whoever it is, I want to know - what is it about their comedy that speaks to you? Is it their fearless honesty, their clever writing, or just their unapologetic irreverence?

For me, what sets Carlin apart is his ability to tackle tough topics with humor and wit, without ever sacrificing his integrity or his values. He's like a comedic prophet, speaking truth to power and challenging his audience to think critically about the world around them. And let's be real, his influence can still be felt in comedy today - from the likes of Dave Chappelle to Hasan Minhaj, Carlin's legacy continues to inspire and provoke new generations of comedians. So let's get the conversation started - who's your favorite old-school comedian, and what makes them so funny to you? Share your thoughts, and let's keep the laughs going in the OnionFarms comedy lounge!

George Carlin and Andrew Dice Clay are terrible picks.

George Carlin was an annoying redditor before Reddit was a thing. And as for Andrew Dice Clay, there's nothing funnier than a kike LARPing as a wop, LARPing as a tough guy, LARPing as a comedian. NEVER FUNNY. Do your little rhymes dice! Do your nursery rhymes with naughty words! Fucking SPARE ME.

I will give you Eddie Murphy and Chris Rock though, but I'm going to put the caveat of Robin Williams and Bill Hicks belonging in the list as well.

Kinda a Coda album, this isn't really a "stand up" album, this is Lenny talking about the court case. I remember watching the Lone Ranger bit, from an album, but cut to an animation. I loved cartoons as a kid, so I thought I'd give it a chance. I was 8, and I didn't really get it. But Lenny stayed with me. He was right "It's not about whether you can cut a piece of ass off, it whether you can cut a piece of as off... with class."
The longest clip you'll find on Sadowitz. Rarely does telly, doesn't allow people to film his shows. I think I have a VHS of his on a cloud, maybe I'll find it. If you like swearing, look him out.
Was really big in the 90s in the UK. My fave bit... Jamie Lee Curtis titty shot. If you know, you know.

Counterpoint:

And ADC is funny because it's max offensiveness before edgy posts were a thing.

Rebuttal: ADC was doing shit that Sam Kinison was doing for some time. ADC was a failed actor (I think he's in Amazon Women On The Moon). He also did stuff that LaWanda Page was doing... well, on records, in the 70s, but she was doing Burlesque in the 50s, so the material dated back some years. I remember ADC, he was always a bit cringe.

I mean...
This guy was doing all the same material (and on TWJC) in the 70s, he did the Dean Martin Show, same era.

I hear you barking big dog but I'm just hearing the same shit that reddit says before Reddit was a thing

Hickory dickory dock.... BIG HAIRY COCK! AGUUUUH.

Fucking idiot. That hack should be the announcer on Eric Andres shitty show. I'd rather watch the autism dry on a vaccinated kid then listen to Andrew Dice Clay's "comedy"

Tell me when this video is telling lies.... 😏

Most of his jokes were stolen from less popular comedians who couldn't call him out on it because they were literally whos. This has been well known for over a decade.

It was known a long time ago that the WRITERS would steal from comedians at the comedy store for Mork and Mindy. Robin had cash on him at all times to pay people for any material that got taken.

Gilbert Gottfried actually told a really funny story how he would always tell Robin that he stole one of his jokes just to hustle him out of a couple of hundred dollars every time he saw him 😂

I don't look at it like a Bill Hicks/Denis Leary scenario, because Robin always made it right with people.

Hicks didn't have a right to complain. You watch early Hicks, he's not the Preacher stand up yet, it's after the ACTUAL preacher Kinison made it... and Sam did make mention of Hicks stealing stuff, mostly the shouting. Dennis, while a muppet baby version of an edgy comic, didn't really deserve the bitchiness of Hicks. True story...

Interviewer: Why did you quit smoking Bill?

Hicks: To see if Dennis would.

He did it himself too though and quit going to comedy clubs he wasn't performing at because of this. I personally wouldn't call his stand up that funny because most of it wasn't his. His acting was pretty good though. Even requiring writers to begin with shows he's not very creative and needs material to work with. His delivery is what people enjoy him for. I don't care much for it.
