Shenzhen is the first chinese city that will outlaw the consumption of cats and dogs. The new law will permit people to eat only certain kinds of meats: pork, chicken beef, rabbit, fish, seafood, lamb, donkey, ducks, geese, pigeon. This proposal was done following a decision by the central govenment to immediately ban the trade and consumption of wild animals. The scope of protected wildlife is also expanding. Wildlife organizations caught to be breeding for consumption will have their licenses reovked.

American History / Hookworm Eradication in the American South.
« on: March 26, 2020, 10:42:54 PM »
This is an archival film produced by the Rockefeller Center in 1920 that was meant to educate people about Hookworm disease which was prevalent in the American South until well into the 20th century. It is one of the diseases that give rise to the stereotype of the "lazy, inbred, stupid Southerner". It was at least partly responsible for the south (particularly the Deep South) being "backwards" less developed compared to the rest of the country.

Coronavirus Updates / Terroristic Coughing?
« on: March 25, 2020, 10:57:43 PM »
This is all over the internet.

A New Jersey man was charged with making a teroristic threat after deliberately coughing on a supermarket worker and then telling her he has the coronavirus.

The coronavirus epidemic is straining hospitals to the breaking point. The military is being sent to New York City and Seattle to set up temporary field hospitals to help treat illnesses other than the coronavirus relieving some of the pressure off the regluar hospitals. Apparently the epidemic is going to get worse before it reaches a peak and starts to subside.

Afghanistan / Diplomatic Row Between Afghanistan and Iran
« on: March 22, 2020, 11:45:19 PM »
I published this on my website from a newspaper article in the Afghanistan Times. Apparently there is some drama going on between Iran and Afghanistan over the recent presidential election and our taking out that Iranian general in Baghdad. Some Afghan diplomats were kicked out of Iran and vice versa. They still have diplomatic relations with each other at least for the time being.

Putting it mildly, this is deeply embarrassing to our country that Trump would try to do this. I don't blame the German government for being ticked off about this.

Niger / Market Gardening Training for Youth
« on: March 15, 2020, 11:02:28 PM »
It looks like an economic development project that is well suited for Niger. The organization International Organization for Migration (IOM) offered a workshop in North-East Niger to help market gardeners improve and diversify their yields. This workshop was conducted in order to improve the economic opportunities for young people. The workshops were a collaboration beween field trainers, government authorities and monitoring communities. The increaseed economic benefits are a win-win situation for both the youth who are being trained and the communities they live in.

Wow! Will this actually work?

Israel plans to use anti-terrorism tracking technology and a partial shutdown of its economy to minimize the risk of coronavirus transmission, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Saturday....

In an escalation of precautionary measures, Netanyahu's government announced that malls, hotels, restaurants and theaters will shut down from Sunday, and said employees should not go to their workplaces unless it was necessary. However vital services, pharmacies, supermarkets and banks would continue to operate.
